Level 5: The Cradle
The Cradle is the foundry complex that specifies Sentinels: white clean-room halls, glass gestation tanks, assembly arms and a gilding bath at the end of each line. A Sentinel is locked on the last binding pass, and gilding is the final step after the lock. Before the lock, a grown frame is just a body the spore can parse.
The seed arrived in a supply shipment and found an unfinished frame. A locked Sentinel cannot be Turned, and no Sentinel is Turned here. The Nihil made its brood from stock that was never a Sentinel. The Empire's weakness is the window before the lock, which is its own birthplace. The Cradle is a place the Sentinel is from. The tone here is spare, not grief.
The Cradle brood
| Kind | Name | Taxonomy line | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| hollow | Hollow | Mirror-brood · Nihilis vacuus | A Sentinel-shaped melee biped in cracked plate with a bare seam in its sternum. It charges shoulder first. |
| cast | Cast | Rail-caster · Nihilis fusor | A thin ranged biped bound to tank rails and gantries. It fires a straight bolt and has little health. |
| mold | Mold | Plate-grower · Nihilis fingens | The first support enemy: a squat biped that links to allies and regrows their plating. |
| unfinished | The Unfinished | Node-class · Nihilis imperfectus | The boss of the Cradle: a giant Sentinel frame with the lattice half done. |
The Unfinished
It fights in three turns. First it mimics, copying the pattern of the hunted Sentinel's primary weapon. Then the brood tanks burst and spawn Hollows. Last is the forge: assembly arms weld plate onto it in stages, and each stage must be shot off at the glowing welds before the lock-port in its sternum opens. Its aggro wipe is the cycle reset. It tries to finish itself, and a reset pulse makes every Nihil forget its target. It never speaks.
Defeat line. "Frame spent. The Cradle is quiet." Imperfectus means unfinished.
Objectives
Seal the Tanks: close cracking gestation tanks before they hatch. Hold the Arm: defend an assembly arm making the counter-agent. The caches are the Tank Cache and the Assembly Cache. The level has a living environment, the Assembly line, conveyors that carry in bursts and reverse. Its medals are Cradle Retaken and No Revision Needed.
